Doggie Birthday Cake

IMG_8743Stinker turned 10 years old today.  Hard to believe she’s that old–she still acts like a puppy in so many ways.  It seems like she’s always been a part of my life, too.  Hubby and I try to remember what our first year of marriage was like before we brought her home from the shelter when she was barely 2 months old…and we can’t!  We cannot recollect what life was like before The Stinker because she’s been such a big part of our lives for most of the time we’ve known each other.  We call ourselves The Three Musketeers.

Aug05Is she not the cutest thing at 2 months old?  It’s one of the few photos I have of her that’s not blurry–amazing she sat still long enough for me to snap this shot!

Since turning 10 is a pretty big deal (for any of us, right?) I decided that Stinker would get her very own birthday cake.  I found a recipe online and tweaked it a tad to keep the calories down since the vet says she’s too fat.  Ha!  We all went for a run tonight and Stinker did great–fat my ass!  This cake is also human-edible, though it’s not very sweet.  You can add some honey to it if you like, but the applesauce adds a bit of sweetness, and honestly, your dog (or husband, or kid) will slick it up and ask for more.

Stinker was a little hesitant at first–she’s not used to eating off a human plate, and she approached cautiously, not sure if she was supposed to be touching this food or not.  But once she figured out it was for her she picked up the entire piece and took it to the carpet (why is it always the carpet??) and ate it there.  It didn’t take her long to mop up the crumbs!

Doggie Birthday Cake

1 egg

1/4 cup peanut butter

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

3/4 cup applesauce

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 cup shredded carrots

1 cup flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl until moist.  Pour into a small greased baking dish (I used a 5 inch diameter pie plate) and bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes.  Cool completely before letting your doggie chow down (hot food can cause them to vomit–I’m speaking from experience here)!
